Whiter teeth with baking powder?

Using baking powder or baking soda to remove surface stains and coating on the teeth is a classic DIY treatment. But does it work and is it safe? Brilliant Smile will give you the answers!

The difference between baking powder and baking soda
Baking soda is the active ingredient in baking powder, but baking powder also contains starch and acid. For the means of teeth whitening, baking soda is preferable as it better preserves a healthy pH in the mouth.

How to get white teeth with baking soda
By brushing your teeth with pure baking soda and water, you grind off coatings and stains on the tooth surface. It can be very effective and it can remove even tougher coatings that are attached strongly onto the teeth. However, it can also grind down the enamel, which is harmful to the teeth and in the long run make the teeth get darker more quickly.

Recommendations
Brilliant Smile does not recommend brushing your teeth with baking soda, as it imposes a too high of a risk of damaging the enamel. Instead, you may use for example a toothpaste containing smaller amounts of baking soda to remove coatings and surface stains.

Brilliant Smile’s intensive care toothpaste, Whitening boost toothpaste, contains a small amount of baking soda. It also contains other ingredients that make the teeth whiter, as well as ingredients that strengthen and protect the enamel.
