What does teeth whitening contain?

There are a lot of different kinds of products that fall under the teeth whitening category. In this post we divide them into two categories, teeth whitening with or without peroxide, and tell you about the active ingredients used for the different categories.

Peroxide whitening

Hydrogen peroxide is used for bleaching and whitening across different industries. For example, it’s used in hair color products and it’s also the most common active ingredient in teeth whitening gel. Hydrogen peroxide breaks down stains and discoloration inside the enamel, and start working instantly after applying it to the teeth.
- Hydrogen peroxide is the active ingredient in our teeth whitening gel for in-office use as well as our daytime home whitening products.

Carbamide peroxide, or urea peroxide is a derivative of hydrogen peroxide. It breaks down inte hydrogen peroxide over time, and it takes about 30-60 minutes for that process to start. You need higher concentration of carbamide peroxide in order to achieve the same effect as hydrogen peroxide. Since this type of whitening takes longer, it’s most suitable for overnight whitening treatment.
- Our gel for overnight use, DeepWhiteEvo, contains 16,5% carbamide peroxide, which is equivalent to 6% hydrogen peroxide.
- We also have a home-use whitening gel that contains both hydrogen- & carbamide peroxide. That makes it suitable for both day- and night whitening treatments.

Peroxide-free whitening

The most common ingredient in peroxide-free teeth whitening products is sodium bicarbonate. Sodium bicarbonate has a cleansing and dissolvning effect, which in this context means it removes surface stains. That can however not be compared to peroxide whitening - which removes stains inside the enamel and give a much more visible result.
