How many teeth do people have?

Girl is laughing

Children have fewer teeth than adults, however the total number of teeth can actually vary between adults. Brilliant Smile tells you more and explain how many teeth people normally have.

Baby teeth
The teeth start forming during pregnancy, but it’s not until the child is about six months old that they start coming up. Once all of the baby teeth have come up, children have 20 teeth in total.
Around the age of six, the baby teeth start falling out and are replaced by the permanent adult teeth.
Even though baby teeth eventually are replaced, it’s still important to take proper care of them. Baby teeth are extra susceptible to cavities, so make sure your child uses fluoride toothpaste every day!

Permanent teeth
Adults have eight incisors (front teeth), four canines, eight premolars and eight molars. In other words, adults normally have at least 28 teeth to last them throughout life. Some adults also have wisdom teeth, at most four of them – one on each side in the very back, in both the lower and upper jaw. That means that adults can have up to a total of 32 teeth.
Take good care of your permanent teeth, they are supposed to last for the rest of your life! Use fluoride toothpaste, both morning and night, every day. Some people may have the need to add extra fluoride to their routine, in that case it’s recommended to use mouthwash with a high fluorine content.
